Baltic Experience: Sailing the Stockholm Archipelago

Tired of well-known and overcrowded sailing destinations? Want to learn how to navigate successfully in a region with not only thousands of islands but also countless hidden dangers just below the surface? Set sail with us to Sweden and discover the beauty of Nordic sailing.

Course information

Sailing through a forest

Anyone who has been around Sweden’s capital knows that it is made up of hundreds of small islands, often so close together that you can almost reach out and touch both sides as you sail through. Discover the magic of this coastline, so different from everything we know in the Mediterranean. Navigate under the guidance of an experienced Czech or Slovak skipper in an environment that stretches the usual idea of sailing with its complexity and beauty. You will see typical Nordic architecture, endless summer days and what can only be described as “sailing through a forest”. The cruise starts in one of the ports near Stockholm and weaves through the archipelago to the open Baltic, with the famous Åland Islands as the goal – weather permitting.

Highlights

  • Stockholm archipelago. Thousands of granite islets and channels so narrow you feel you could touch the shore from the deck.
  • Vaxholm, Möja and Arholma. Red wooden houses, quiet harbours and a route through the archipelago right to its outer edge.
  • Åland and Mariehamn. Cross the open Baltic to the autonomous Åland Islands and their capital – your reward for the first real passage.
  • Sandhamn. On the way back you anchor in the sailing heart of Sweden, on the edge of the archipelago.

Join with your own boat

You can book a place on board as an individual, or join our flotilla with your own boat and crew. In that case you are responsible for your boat and crew yourselves, but you have an experienced NYS instructor who plans each leg for you and helps wherever needed. Ideal for sailors with skippering experience who would rather not head into Nordic waters alone.

Mile-building cruises with NYS

Mile-building cruises are a core part of sail training at NYS Sailing School, an RYA Training Centre. We choose each destination for what you will learn there – and the Swedish archipelago is one of the best places to learn precise navigation among islands and shallows.
